Woolworths is one of the biggest suppliers of poker machines in Australia, providing more than 12 000 games to clubs, pubs and casinos across the country. As such, it has become the target to anti-gambling organization GetUp, which wants to see the gaming operator impose $1 betting limits on its pokies. The organization has worked hard to gain support for the issue, and it has paid off – as hundreds of Woolworths shareholders are on board with the idea of $1 betting limits on pokie machines.
210 shareholders filed a request with the directors of Woolworths, requesting that an EGM (extraordinary general meeting) be held to discuss the issue. Just 100 shareholders are required to make such a request, but GetUp has gone above and beyond, illustrating just how much support there is for $1 betting limits. Woolworths has 21 days to respond to the request and the meeting must be held within 49.
Currently, betting limits range from $5 to $10, and GetUp is giving Woolworths until 2016 to equip machines with the software necessary to limit wagers. With just under 4 years to outfit 12 000 machines, Woolworths would have enough time to ensure that the job is done right.
