Crown Ltd and Echo Entertainment Battle Over Sydney Exclusivity

In 2019, Echo Entertainment no longer has exclusivity in Sydney’s casino market. Crown Casinos is now making plans to encroach on The Star’s territory by building a high roller gambling venue in Barangaroo – but Echo Entertainment has not taken the situation lying down. This week, the company announced its plans to expand its casino into a resort property, and NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell has given Echo the go-ahead to submit a proposal.

Crown and Echo are proposing two entirely different ideas for the expansion of Sydney’s gambling market. While Crown plans to build a high-roller venue that will appeal to millionaires from overseas, Echo Entertainment wants to expand into a resort that will present multiple entertainment opportunities for guests. It will be up to local politicians to decide while option will be best for the local community.

Crown CEO James Packer believes that his company’s proposal will be the successful one. He states that The Star is no well-positioned to attract the type of tourism that will boost Sydney’s economy. As such, he is confident that Crown Casino will be able to host a high roller gambling venue in Sydney in 2019. However, the competition is likely to heat up now that two companies are vying for one opportunities – and Echo Entertainment will certainly up its ante.
