For months, Brisbane politicians have been weighing the pros and cons of opening up a new casino in the city. Now, the state government has made the decision infinitely easier. This week, Premier Campbell Newman announced that Queensland will be handing out a total of three new casino licenses.
At the moment, Echo Entertainment and Crown Casinos are competing for the chance to expand Brisbane’s gambling market. Echo Entertainment wants to expand its Treasury Casino into a larger property and Crown Casinos wants to build an entirely new high-roller gambling venue. Previously, there was only room for once project – but now, both may be able to proceed, even if there are not both located in the capital.
The Queensland government hopes to grant three new casinos licenses in order to boost its tourism market. Mr Newman believes that the key to improving the economy is the introduction of integrated casino resorts, which will draw in wealthy tourists from Asia and other locations around the world. He has stated that the future of Queensland’s tourism is ‘bleak’ without these venues.
Casino operators have until the end of the year to submit expressions of interest. We are curious to see which operators decide to apply for the licenses.
